OUR STORY

filo is a place where the food tastes good and does good. Quality and sustainability are at the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s the coffee, food, bakes from local businesses, design or customer service, we want to offer the highest possible standards.

We take our name from the Latin from threads. All lives are woven together and our actions have an impact: from the grower of the coffee, to the maker of the soup, to the volunteer serving the table.

Come and make yourself at home.

We want to write a better story for our community, city and world. But we don’t just talk the talk. We’ve got receipts.

Since launching, we’ve:

• Generated 5.2 MWH of electricity saving 5.12 tons of CO2: the equivalent of 2 tonnes of coal being burnt. We’ve done this by using LED lights, installing 120 solar panels, investing in an efficient Air to Air source heating system, improving loft and wall insulation and installing smart heating controls.

• Partnered with HMP Grampian to offer a work placement

• Had our coffee roasted in Inverness by the Inverness Roasting Co, delivered in compostable packaging

• Chosen to use takeaway cups and stickers that are made of 100% recycled and biodegradable materials like wood pulp, kraft paper and recycled paper.

• Chosen food packaging that is biodegradable.

• Worked with at least 10 independent businesses

• Baked all our cakes on site so we know exactly where all the ingredients come from and there's no nasties in them

Be a story changer by paying it forward

We know life can be hard sometimes and small actions make a big difference. That’s why we offer an option to pay it forward. You could make someone’s day by buying an extra coffee when you check out.

Maybe you’re having a rough day. You’ve had bad news. You’re struggling to get by. You’re freezing cold (we know what Aberdeen winters are like). Come in and ask for the filo special and get a free tea or coffee, funded by generosity.

Coffee House Manager

Chris Granges

“I wanted to be a part of filo because of the difference and impact it could have on people's lives. I have always loved working in customer service and the highlight of my day is often the interactions I get to have with customers in the coffee house, getting to know them, opening up our space and allowing them to feel at home.

With filo we’re able to do more of this, because it’s not just our customers who are part of the story but also the volunteer staff, participants in our social enterprise and local business owners. I’m excited to work alongside people and businesses that give back to our community.”

Transform Food Catering Manager/Chef

Scott Calder

"By definition hospitality is a people focused industry. It's about creating dishes our customers love but it's also about the people who create the dishes. At Transform Food, I'm using my passion to encourage and empower those in need in our community, using food as a vehicle to develop skills and build confidence. At filo, you get to hear the stories of people who are part of our catering team and help us tackle barriers to employment, one person at a time. I'm excited to combine my love of food and service with a more poignant purpose - it's a real privilege to be part of the team."

Catalyst Vineyard Church

filo is part of Catalyst Vineyard Church, a growing, worshipping community of Jesus-followers, passionate about being and speaking good news to the world. We’ve got services all over the city and the shire and you’d be so welcome to come and meet us, explore faith and ask questions.

[or just show up at filo at 11am on a Sunday!]
